I trust you're well and in good spirits.  Continue to practice an abundance of caution in all activities.

The purpose of this e-mail is to provide detail on the upcoming Building Capacity HBCU virtual webinar series "Fundamentals of Collection Care."  As you recall, the HBCU Library Alliance was awarded a $365,000 NEH Building Capacity matching challenge grant to build capacity for the long-term preservation and conservation of collections at member libraries. "Fundamentals of Collections Care" is an educational program of Building Capacity HBCU, a five-year program of the HBCU Library Alliance. This webinar series is being developed and presented by the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts. Funding for Building Capacity HBCU has been generously provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The Fundamentals of Collection Care virtual series is scheduled to begin the week of October 11th. Each week will focus on a different subject. This certificate program is open to all library employees, Work Study students, and interns. Registration is required, with a finish-line of Tuesday, October 6. Registration information is detailed below.

Fundamentals of Collection Care Virtual Series
Session One: Essential Policies and Procedures (Tuesday, October 13 through Thursday, October 15)

This session will provide an overview of policy and planning documents that are essential for collections care, such as collections management policies, handling guidelines, and maintenance policies. Participants will learn the critical components of these documents and tangible examples of how to adapt them to different institutions will be given. Policy development, approval, and implementation responsibilities of staff and volunteers will be discussed.

Session Two: Basic Care of Paper Collections (Tuesday, October 20 through Thursday, October 22)

This session serves as an introduction to best practices in caring for any paper-based collection. Topics covered include: handling guidelines, assessing storage materials and special needs items, prioritizing for treatment, and understanding preservation and conservation terminology. This program is appropriate for those looking to develop new skills, as well as for individuals wanting to increase their knowledge about best practices in the care of paper-based collections.

Wednesday, October 21, 10:30: hands-on exercise led through Zoom call.

Session Three: Fundraising for Preservation and Conservation (Tuesday, October 27 through Thursday, October 29)

This session will highlight the aspects of the planning process that funders value most and the elements of a successful grant proposal. With examples drawn from success stories at museums, historic sites, libraries, and archives, program participants will gain an understanding of how to effectively develop and implement a funding strategy to raise money for their collections.

Fundamentals of Collection Care is the first of two certificate series offered through Building Capacity. The second series, scheduled in February 2021, will offer four webinars on these topics: Housing Solutions, Introduction to Digitization, Preservation Best Practices, and Preserving Photographic Collections.
