Former Presidential Cabinet Member to Speak at ASU's Health Disparities Lecture
ASU's inaugural Baines-Woodruff Endowed Lectureship on Health Disparities will feature a former member of President George H.W. Bush's cabinet and leading authority on health care.
A former member of the president's cabinet, Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, who is a leading national expert on health care, will address ASU's inaugural lecture on health care issues that affect Alabama and the nation--specifically health care disparities among the nation's African-American population.
The conference is scheduled for March 2 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Ralph D. Abernathy auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
The focus of the event is to highlight efforts to improve health inequities and to find solutions through discussions of issues that limit equity in healthcare access and outcomes.
Sullivan served as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for President George H.W. Bush from 1989-1993. He created President Bush's health care reform proposal. Sullivan is president emeritus and founder of the Morehouse University School of Medicine and is chairman of the Sullivan Alliance.
The Baines-Woodruff Endowed Lectureship on Health Disparities, the first of its kind at ASU, was established by Dr. Steven B. Chesbro, dean of ASU's College of Health Sciences.
"The College of Health Sciences at ASU is quickly establishing itself as a leading voice for addressing disparities in health care among the citizens of Alabama and across the country. We are delighted to begin this new lectureship series for connecting tomorrow's healthcare providers, community members, and healthcare professionals with our nation's leading researchers and policymakers," Chesbro said.
Medical professionals, students and the local community are invited to attend.
The lectureship series is named in honor of health care advocates Dr. Ruth E. Baines, former assistant chancellor of Health Sciences for the State University of New York (SUNY) Central Administration; and Dr. Lynda D. Woodruff, a trailblazer in physical therapy education.
The College of Health Sciences and the Center to Advance Rehabilitative Health and Education at ASU are sponsoring the event.
