Nursing Students Showcase Acting Chops During Emergency Drill
On Wednesday morning, students in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Coahoma Community College were cast as the victims of an accident involving a bus and a large truck carrying farm chemicals during an emergency management drill held behind the Clarksdale Fire Department location on the 800 block of Sasse Street.
Each of the students was assigned a particular injury, and instructed to interact with emergency personnel as if they were part of a live accident scene. The drill involved the Clarksdale Police Department, Coahoma County Sheriff's Department, the city and county fire departments, the county coroner, Pafford Ambulance Service, and personnel at Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.
The accident call went out over the emergency airwaves at approximately 9:30 a.m., and firefighters, EMTs and paramedics arrived and begin to assess the accident scene. Victims were triaged and assigned "colors" based on the seriousness of their injuries. The chemical spill involved in the accident forced firefighters to set up a field decontamination station where those exposed to the chemical had to be treated before being able to be transported to the ER.
"This is something that we do to assess our response, and it's also required by both FEMA and MEMA on order for us to keep our accreditation," said CFD Training Officer Robert Birdsong.
CCC students played the roles of victims with broken limbs, trouble breathing, a pregnant passenger on the bus and even family members who had lost a loved one in the crash.
