Savannah State University News March 1, 2017 SSU Model African Union team brings home awards Savannah State University's (SSU) Model African Union (AU) team participated in the 15th Annual National Model African Union Conference<http://www.modelafricanunion.org/National_Model_African_Union/National_Model_African_Union_Conference.html> in Washington, D.C., February 23-26. The conference was hosted by Howard University in collaboration with the African Union Mission in Washington, D.C., and member state embassies. The eight-member team included Sabastian Guthrie, a senior history major; Rufus Crane, a freshman political science major; Adrian English, a senior political science major; Schonn Franklin, a freshman political science major; Dartanion Jones, a junior mass communications major; Travis Nixon, a master of public administration student; Bryanna Sanders, a junior marine sciences major; and Selina Stringer, a junior biology major. Otilia Iancu, Ph.D.<http://www.savannahstate.edu/profiles/profile.aspx?n=Otilia_Iancu>, is the faculty advisor for the Model AU club. Team members served as delegates from the nations of Benin and Burundi in this simulation of the African Union. Schonn Franklin, won the Committee Leadership Award and the Outstanding Delegation Committee Award for his representation of Benin in the Peace and Security Committee, and Sabastian Guthrie, won the Outstanding Delegation Committee Award for his representation of Benin in the Executive Council Committee. Delegation members also attended embassy briefings. SSU students representing Burundi met with His Excellency Ernest Ndabashinze, Ambassador of Burundi to the United States, while students representing Benin met with the Cultural and Social Attaché Valentin Biaou and Counselor Freud Klissou at the Embassy of Benin to the United States. More than 400 students from 34 universities across the world participated in the conference, including American University of Nairobi, Kenya; Université de Montreal; University of Ottawa; Penn State University; James Madison University; University of Georgia; Kennesaw State University and the United States Air Force Academy.
