Coahoma Community College News January 31, 2014 CCC's Career Tech Department to Host SkillsUSA Week Coahoma Community College's Division of Career and Technical Education is gearing up to commemorate SkillsUSA Week, Feb. 6-12, in conjunction with National Career and Technical Education Month. SkillsUSA is a national organization serving high school and college students as well as professional members. "It's a professional organization comprised of students, teachers and industry partners working together to ensure that America has a skilled workforce," said organizer Shelia Sanders, support service coordinator in CCC's Career and Technical Education Division. "It also helps our students excel in specific areas within their program." According to Sanders, every CCC Career and Technical student is a member of the organization, which serves high school and college students enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations, in high schools and college/technical schools. On CCC's campus, the student members can be seen volunteering-acting as ushers during various campus events, for an example. They also perform various service projects in the Clarksdale community. "It broadens the students and helps them with teamwork, citizenship skills and building self-confidence. It's a great opportunity, so we try to get them all involved in SkillsUSA week," Sanders said. SkillsUSA week is celebrated the second week February each year and this will be CCC's third year joining the national observance. The week's scheduled events are as follows: Monday, Feb. 10- Media Bliss Day: Vice President of Career and Technical Education Anne Clark will give a proclamation announcing National SkillsUSA week at 9 a.m. in The Gallery. Students will also receive information about SkillsUSA. Refreshments will be served. Tuesday, Feb.11- Students will volunteer at The Care Station, serving food and stocking items from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Wednesday, Feb. 12- SkillsUSA Workshop: Student members will watch an informational video about the organization at 9 a.m. in the Gallery. Trivia questions, door prizes and refreshments will follow. Thursday, Feb. 13- Members will wear customized SkillsUSA t-shirts. Friday, Feb. 14- SkillsUSA Appreciation Breakfast: Career and Technical instructors will enjoy a hot breakfast prepared by JoAnn Hoskins, culinary arts instructor, and students at 9:15 a.m. in The Gallery. Following SkillsUSA week, members will turn their focus to the SkillsUSA Mississippi State Leadership and Skills Conference slated for Feb. 24, where they'll showcase their respective skillsets and face off against other members from high schools and colleges across Mississippi. Those winning at the state level will advance to the national competition held in Kansas City, MO in June.
