Howard University News October 25, 2011 Howard University Assoc. Sr. V.P. Receives Courage to Lead Award WASHINGTON - Dr. Robin C. Newton, the associate senior vice president for Clinical Affairs and Quality and the Designated Instruction Official (DIO) at Howard University Health Sciences, has been named a recipient of the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME, which is responsible for the accreditation of post-medical degree medical training programs within the United States, gives the award annually to three outstanding DIOs in different categories based on the size of the institution. The institutions are rated small, medium or large in relation to the number of residency programs they offer. Nominated by her colleagues, Newton, who oversees all graduate medical education, is being recognized for her leadership and commitment to creating an excellent environment for medical resident education at Howard University Hospital through the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. According to the award, Newton's efforts facilitated medical residents' ethical, professional and personal development and ensured safe and appropriate care of patients. "To receive the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award through the nomination and recommendation of your peers is humbling," Newton said. "This award serves as a national validation of the Graduate Medical Education work we do here at Howard. I would like to thank my colleagues, the program directors and especially the residents who supported my nomination." Newton, who received her medical degree at Howard's College of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine, has long demonstrated leadership in medical education. She spent 18 years teaching medical students and working at D.C. General Hospital, where she ultimately became the chief medical officer She served for three years on the Group on Resident Affairs Steering Committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges, a not-for-profit association representing all 135 accredited U.S. and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools, nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems and nearly 90 academic and scientific societies. She currently serves on the Institutional Review Committee of the ACGME. Newton will receive her honor Friday, March 2, in Orlando, Fla., during the ACGME's awards ceremony at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin resort hotel. SANDRA M.
