Howard and Bermuda to Sign Medical Agreement

WASHINGTON (September 3, 2010) – The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Howard University is entering a landmark agreement to provide medical services to Bermuda at 10 a.m. on Sept. 17. The island of Bermuda, under the leadership of Premier Dr. Ewart Brown, a Howard University College of Medicine alumnus, has aggressively sought to improve on-island patient care by partnering with top U.S. medical schools.

“The addition of Howard University in the field of psychiatry is appropriate and important," Brown said. "As a Howard graduate, I am particularly proud of this achievement."

William B. Lawson, M.D., chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will oversee the partnership. Under the agreement, Howard will provide regular consultation services in psychiatry, which include telepsychiatry and visits of faculty to the island. A new fellowship is also planned.

Premier Brown, a community-minded, internationally acclaimed physician, spent many years practicing medicine in the United States. Born in Bermuda, Premier Brown graduated from Howard University with a B.S. degree in Chemistry and received his M.D. degree from Howard’s College of Medicine. He subsequently earned a M.P.H. degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.
