Tuskegee University News September 27, 2011 University becomes only HBCU with Materials Science and Engineering department Tuskegee University formally opened its Department of Materials Science and Engineering during a ribbon cutting on Sept. 24 at Gen. Daniel "Chappie" James Center. The addition to the university's College of Engineering and Physical Sciences makes Tuskegee the only historically black college or university with such a department. Subra Suresh, director of the National Science Foundation, and several of the organization's program managers attended the department's opening. Suresh and Tuskegee University President Gilbert L. Rochon cut the ribbon to officially "open" the department. The Tuskegee University Board of Trustees approved the new department in March. The university produces the largest number of black Ph.D. holders in materials science and engineering in the U.S. This program is directed by Shaik Jeelani, vice president for research and sponsored programs. The board has also approved the development of a master's degree in materials science and engineering. SANDRA M.
