CCC Fit for Life Program Extended for Third Cycle

Coahoma Community College's (CCC) Fit for Life program was recently awarded $144,152 by the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation. The program aims to help CCC employees, students and the community improve their quality of life by providing access to fitness equipment, wellness activities and information on living a healthier lifestyle.

So far, the grant has supported the construction of a half-mile walking trail featuring six five-exercise stations on CCC's campus, as well as provided state-of-the-art fitness equipment for the college's Fitness and Wellness Center located in the Frank Gambrell Student Affairs Multi-Complex. The program has also featured on-campus fitness coaches and nutritionists, as well as a wide array of fun-filled fitness activities.

"CCC's Fit for Life program has established a foundation of health and wellness resources for the campus and surrounding community, and we are confident that this positive momentum will continue and expand into the future," said Sheila Grogan, executive director of the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation.

Coahoma Community College President, Dr. Valmadge T. Towner, is pleased that this great partnership continues to grow and flourish.

"We are excited about our continued partnership with the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation," he said. "Our goal is to improve the personal health and wellness of our campus and community. We also recognize the need to improve the awareness of health and wellness issues among our students and staff. A word of gratitude is due to Mrs. Letha Richards, CCC's Fit for Life Director, for spearheading our health and wellness initiatives."

Letha Richards is proud of what this initiative has meant to the CCC community and hopes to do many things in this funding cycle.

"CCC Fit for Life will continue promoting fitness and nutrition on our campus and in our community," she said. " I am extremely excited about the activities that we have planned. I am anticipating record-breaking participation and record-breaking improvements in our health this year. I would like to thank the Foundation for its unwavering support and guidance to help us create a culture of fitness and nutrition on our campus and in our community."

With this third cycle of funding, the program hopes to provide more educational awareness activities to the CCC community, encourage campus personnel and students to become more physically active and improve the health status of at least 25 percent of participants.

To date, Coahoma Community College has been awarded $643,932 over three years for the Fit for Life Initiative.

Coming this summer, Fit for Life will kick off its Fitness and Nutrition Summer Boot Camp.  The program is slated to begin June 7, 2018.
