Hampton University News October 8, 2021 Hampton University Sociology Professor and Department Chair, Publishes Eighth Book, Sociology for the New Tribe of the Digital Age Dr. Shahid M. Shahidullah, Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Hampton University, has recently published a book titled "Sociology for the New Tribe of the Digital Age." This is his eighth published book, and the fifth published since his arrival at Hampton University in 2015. The book was published by Cognella Publishers of California, a reputed global publishing company. "This latest book is another great example of Hampton University's professors leading the way in today's society. Dr. Shahid Shahidullah's work is just one of the many contributions to the world that Hampton University has made over the last 150 years," said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey. "The digital tribe-the leaders and shapers of the coming decades of global events and issues-needs knowledge and skills, not just about social media and digital technology. They need to know the more fundamental forces of social and political transformations-race, class, gender, ideology, and religion. The new digital tribe is growing up with a vision for positive social change and a world free from racism, sexism, nativism, divisiveness, and bigotry. Indeed, the new digital tribe is the new generation of "sociologists" in the making for the 21st century," said Dr. Shahidullah. Dr. Shahidullah said in this book that "Future historians will probably describe the beginning of the 21st century as one of the most intriguing and enigmatic times in human history. The first two decades of the 21st century have seen the "best of time"-the emergence of digital society and the opening of a vast horizon of unfathomable human possibilities for a peaceful and productive social order based on knowledge building and creativity. However, the first two decades of the 21st century have also seen the "worst of time"-the rise of right-wing populism, racism, nativism, divisiveness, terrorism, as well as religious violence and intolerance worldwide. At no stage in American history were these issues as central to political debates and discourses as they are in the second decade of the 21st century." The book explores how different generations think differently, face other challenges, and need additional knowledge and skillsets. America's baby boom generation differed from generation X, and generation X was different from the millennial generation. The millennial generation is again somewhat different from today's generation Z- the generation born in the wake of the birth of the digital age in the 21st century. Dr. Shahidullah believes that a new skill set for the digital tribe must be based on a vast understanding of liberal arts knowledge that is historical, comparative, and global, and at the same deeply anchored in modern science and digital technology. In his view, Hampton University's core competencies in general education are superbly essential for the new digital tribe. Hence, the need for sociology for a unique skill set for the digital tribe is vital. Dr. Shahidullah said that another edited book titled "Advancements in Global Cyber Laws and Regulations" is in the press. IGI Global Publications will publish it in 2022 (co-edited by Dr. Zina McGee in the Department of Social Sciences and Dr. Carla D. Miller in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, North Carolina A&T University).
