By Lois G. Russell

One of ASU's senior leaders recently delivered a featured presentation about social media during the National Education Association's Higher Education Conference.

Zillah M. Fluker, a senior official at Alabama State University, recently served as a featured presenter at the National Education Association's Higher Education Conference in San Diego, Calif.

Fluker, ASU's vice president for Institutional Advancement, hosted a session titled "Extend Your Organization's Reach through Social Media." The session focused on the impact of social media on communications.

"I was extremely honored to have the opportunity to represent Alabama State University on a national platform," said Fluker. "I was able to engage with education leaders and innovators from across the country on behalf of ASU. It really was a rewarding experience."

As the head of the University's Institutional Advancement division, Fluker is responsible for several areas including Development, Alumni Relations and Communications, which includes social media. She has championed President Gwendolyn E. Boyd's mandate to strengthen ASU's social media presence across all available platforms.

Fluker said all organizations need to become current in this practice or face being left behind.

"Social media, in all of its many facets, is the most effective way to reach and stay current with one's constituents and stakeholders and to communicate important messages," Fluker said. "One must master social media's many avenues such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Periscope and the like, unless you wish your organization to be left at the gate."
