NCCU News: Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA) will arrive Nov. 29 to examine all aspects of North Carolina Central University Police Department policy and procedure, management, operations and support services, Police Chief Willie Bell announced today.

Verification by the team that NCCU Police Department meets the commission's state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, Bell said.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. n the Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute (BBRI) Building, 531 Nelson St.

Those who wish to make comments but cannot attend the public information session may do so by telephone at 919-530-5408. The comment line will be open from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30.

Comments submitted via telephone as well as those taken at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes in length and must address only the agency's compliance with CALEA's standards. Copies of the standards are available at the NCCU Police Department via Belinda Pounds, who may be contacted at 919-530-5804.

Written comments regarding the NCCU Police Department's performance in relation to accreditation standards will also be accepted. Mail all written comments to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155.

The NCCU Police Department must comply with 480 CALEA standards in order to earn accreditation, Bell said.

The accreditation program manager for the NCCU Police Department is Belinda Pounds. The outside assessors are Chief Linda Stump-Kurnick from the University of Florida, who will serve as team leader, and Portia Swinson, formerly of the University of Maryland-Baltimore Police Force, now retired. The assessors will review written materials, conduct interviews, and visit offices and other sites where police activity is subject to compliance measures.

Once the commission's assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status, Pounds said.

Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.

For more information regarding the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. please write the Commission at 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320 Gainesville, VA 20155.
