Jackson State University News March 24, 2017 School of Journalism & Media Studies hosts joint conference with Mississippi press group Jackson State University's School of Journalism and Media Studies 2017 Conference, "Multimedia: How It's Delivered, How It's Received," will feature media professionals who will share their expertise and guide students into successful careers in mass communication. The conference is Thursday, March 30 at the Mississippi e-Center@JSU and opens at 9 a.m. with a presentation by Mississippi Today's Co-Editors Fred Anglan and Dennis Moore on digital resources for multimedia journalists. For the first time, this year the Mississippi Press Association will hold its 19th Annual O.C. McDavid Journalism Conference in conjunction with the SJMS Conference. Collegiate journalists from across the state and members of the MPA will join in conference sessions and breakout for a special lunchtime presentation that focuses on coverage of community lifestyles and the arts by artist and editorial cartoonist Ricky Nobile and conclude with the presentation of the Better Newspaper Contest Student Division Awards. Michael Wallace, senior editor, contributor and analyst with Grind City Media, the luncheon speaker, will share strategies to "Survive and Thrive in the Digital Age." Wallace, based in Miami, has covered some of the greatest athletes to enter the field. He began his career at The Shreveport Times in 1997 and has since worked at The Tallahassee Democrat, The Clarion-Ledger and The Miami Herald, before joining ESPN as a Miami Heat reporter. He can also be heard on ESPN Radio where he co-hosts the national Rothenberg Mike'd Up radio show on Saturday evenings. The keynote speaker for the 7 p.m. banquet is Alysia Steele, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and member of the Dallas Morning News Hurricane Katrina award-winning team. She is an assistant journalism professor at the University of Mississippi and author of the book Delta Jewels: In Search of My Grandmother's Wisdom. She also is the 2016 recipient of Preserver of Mississippi Culture Award from the Mississippi Humanities Council and the 2015 Ofield Dukes Educator of the Year. Panelists include broadcast personalities from local stations who will discuss investigative news reporting; and experts from local public relations, advertising/marketing firms will address new skills needed for successful public relations, strategic communication and integrated marketing communication careers. Afternoon panels will delve into sports coverage in the digital age followed by a group of newspaper publishers who will stress the basics for good storytelling is good writing no matter the media platform.
