Shaw University Receives Grant for Documentary
Shaw University officials announced today that it received a grant from the AJ Fletcher Foundation to produce a documentary about the University. The University will partner with the Foundation to create an hour-long documentary that highlights the University's historic legacy, unparalleled leadership and long-time commitment to serving its community.
"We are proud to work with Shaw University on this project," said Barbara Goodmon, president of the AJ Fletcher Foundation. "Shaw's alumni have played a significant role in advancing civil rights for men and women, including a personal hero of mine, Ella Baker. It is our hope that this film will provoke meaningful dialogue during this critical time in our country."
Founded in 1865, Shaw University is the oldest historically Black university in the Southern United States. The documentary will coincide with the University's 150th (sesquicentennial) anniversary taking place this year. The film is expected to be completed by December 1, 2015 to mark the University's founding on December 1, 1865.
"The opportunity to tell our story through this documentary is enormous," said Shaw University Interim President Dr. Gaddis J. Faulcon. "We are grateful to the Fletcher Foundation for helping us to share our history, our heritage and our contributions with a new audience."
