Collecting the Now
Tuesday, September 8th | 10:00am ET

How do we collect objects from diverse communities in an inclusive way? What are the preconditions when it comes to collecting a crisis? How can we be mindful in collecting? Can we think of contemporary collecting as a strategy for collective care? Danielle Kuijten will be joining CCAHA for a discussion about the challenges of collecting in the now. She will share some experiences on community collecting, enhancing the importance of actively engaging with people and documenting directly, while keeping situations relevant and manageable.

This is a free webinar with opportunity to pose questions to the speaker and join the discussion across borders on preserving community through collections.

Imagine IC is an open floor for heritage democracy in Amsterdam Southeast, with a long standing expertise in participatory heritage construction and heritage education. Collaborating with the neighborhood, the city and (inter) national heritage partners, Imagine IC gives meaning to (prospective) items of heritage, while negotiating the 'Amsterdam Collection'. The organisation has an inherently inclusive and participatory approach, promoting the understanding of heritage as a collective cultural phenomenon as well as a dynamic artefact. Imagine IC does this by taking their own neighborhood, 'De Bijlmer' a suburb in the Southeast of Amsterdam, as a case study.

About the Speaker:
Danielle Kuijten holds a Master of Museology (M. Museology) from the Reinwardt Academy in Amsterdam. As a freelancer she is active in the heritage field under the name Heritage Concepting. Her main focus in projects is on participatory collecting methods, contemporary collecting, action curating, and reflective practice. Since 2012 she also works as co-curator and programmer on projects for Imagine IC, a pioneer in the field of heritage of the contemporary society. Recent projects she produced here were on topics of resistance, gender and slavery. At Imagine IC she also heads the co-collection lab. This lab researches a variety of collecting/collection questions like how to work with shared authority, democratizing heritage practices. Danielle is a regular guest on international conferences giving presentations and workshops. Furthermore she is a chair /president of COMCOL, ICOM’s international committee for collecting.

Light Levels for Exhibition
Monday, September 14th | 2:00pm ET

Understanding light, the damage it causes, and human visual perception allows collection care staff to make informed decisions. Join CCAHA Senior Paper Conservator Heather Hendry for a free webinar explaining basic principles of managing light exposure.

Intended for collection managers, registrars, and curators, this session will address measuring and monitoring visible and UV light, current standards for light exposure during exhibition, and successful strategies to avoid unnecessary exposure. The relative light sensitivity of various art and archival material will be discussed. Case studies will demonstrate how small and large institutions control light on collections during exhibition and storage.

Light Exposure for Artifacts on Exhibition
Technical Bulletin updated for 2020

Light can cause damage to collections. The amount of damage is determined by the intensity and type of light, the time of exposure, and the natural resistance of the object’s components. Light damage is not only limited to fading: overexposure can also cause weakening, discoloration, yellowing and embrittlement. Damage caused by light exposure is both cumulative and irreversible.
