Nikki Giovanni Headlines ASU’s 8th Annual Poetry Festival

Students, faculty, staff and the Albany community will celebrate the artistic expression of the written and spoken word at the Albany State University 8th Annual Poetry Festival Nov. 9 through Nov. 11. The three-day event will include performances, poetry workshops, and discussions with world- renowned poet, Nikki Giovanni and featured artists Nikky Finney, Frank X Walker, Hoke Glover and Lita Hooper.

This year’s poetry festival celebrates the literary histories and cultural legacies of legendary figures such as the late Dr. Maya Angelou and Amiri Baraka. The theme, “Poetic Ancestries,” inspires connoisseurs of the written and spoken word to cultivate the relationships between past and present literary generations.

The festival kicks off Sunday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. with “Vision Quest,” a poetry reading with Nikki Giovanni in the ASU Student Center Ballroom. Monday and Tuesday are filled with guest performances, open discussions, empowerment forums, poetry readings, and the spoken word.

“ASU is quickly developing a national reputation for our Poetry Festival,” said Jeffery Mack, associate professor of English.  “Each year that we bring amazing poets to our community, we demonstrate a commitment to the language of the ‘beautifully-said thing’ for which poets are best known. We are excited about all of the great things that are happening on our campus, and look forward to sharing with the community.”

The poetry festival is sponsored by the ASU Department of English, Modern Languages and Mass Communication, the T. Marshall Jones Fine Arts and Lyceum Performance Series, and Title III. The event is free and open to the public.
