Two students win President's Second Mile Award

Alicia Montgomery from Atlanta, Georgia, and Rayne Clark from Pompano Beach, Florida, each received the President's Second Mile Award at the 194thcommencement ceremony for Savannah State University (SSU) on May 11, 2019.  The award, which recognizes remarkable leadership on campus, in the Savannah community and beyond, is open to graduating seniors.

Montgomery, a business management major, is a first generation college student. She served in the U.S. Army as a signal support specialist before beginning her college career. At SSU, she was vice president of the Student Government Association and as a volunteer at St. Joseph's/Candler emergency room and Inner City Night Shelter. She was also SSU's representative for the White House HBCU All-Star program in 2016-17. She will participate in a summer training program with the Department of Justice before beginning to earn a master's degree in public administration in the fall.

Clark, a chemistry major, mentored her peers through numerous campus organizations, including the residence hall association, choral music society, student orientation leaders and the SSU chapter of the American Chemical Society. She was the first freshman student lead on Department of Defense research on two proteins linked to cardiovascular disease. She also discovered a way to deter mold formation in buildings. She was inducted into the STRIPES Society for her community service efforts, including hurricane relief in Panama City, Fla. Clark has a job offer with Henry County Schools for fall.
