Alabama State University News February 7, 2018 'Me Too' Founder to Speak at ASU Tarana Burke, founder of the 'me too' movement and social justice activist, will serve as the keynote speaker for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences' Distinguished Lecture Series. ****** Alabama State University's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will host its Distinguished Lecture Series and luncheon on Friday, March 10 from 10 a.m. to noon in John Garrick Hardy Student Center ballroom and the Dunn-Oliver Acadome banquet room. Tarana Burke, founder of the 'me too' movement and social justice activist, will be the guest speaker. The cost to attend the lecture is $10 for students (student ID required), $25 for General Admission, and General admission plus CEU is $35. The luncheon, which will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the Dunn-Oliver Banquet Room is $25 (luncheon only); $50 (including the lecture); and $60 (luncheon, lecture and CEU certification). Funds will be used to help support research and students at ASU. About Tarana Burke Burke is known for being the first to use the phrase "me too" in 2006 to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of sexual abuse and assault in society. The phrase has since developed into a broader movement. "TIME" magazine named Burke among a group of other prominent female activists dubbed "the silence breakers", as the "TIME's Person of the Year for 2017. In addition to her many speaking engagements, Burke organizes workshops to help improve policies at schools, workplaces, and places of worship, and focuses on helping victims not blame themselves for sexual violence. She also serves as senior director at Girls for Gender Equity, which strives to help young women of color increase their overall development through various programs and classes. Burke was born and raised in Queens, N. Y. As a teenager, she became involved in working to improve the lives of young girls living in marginalized communities. In 2008, she moved to Philadelphia to further her work as an activist. She worked at Art Sanctuary Philadelphia as well as at other non-profits. She was a consultant for the Hollywood movie Selma.
