Finalists for ASU President Meet with Stakeholders and Board of Trustees

Members of Hornet Nation and the Board of Trustees had the opportunity to meet the four men who have emerged as finalists for the position of President of Alabama State University.

The four finalists for President of Alabama State University spent their day on campus on Thursday, Aug. 24, participating in introductory and informational sessions with ASU faculty, staff and students, alumni and members of the community, as well as interview sessions with members of the Board of Trustees and the Presidential Search Committee.

Dr. Tony Atwater, Dr. Willie Larkin, Dr. Robert Mock and Dr. Quinton Ross emerged as the "Final Four" after a nationwide search for applicants for the position of University President.

"We had approximately 50 candidates," said Search Committee Chairman, Trustee Darrell Hudson. "The Search Committee did a yeoman's job of spending hours of time going through each application package until we got to the point that we agreed that these would be the four finalists that we would like to present to the Board of Trustees."

Each of the finalists was able to meet with the University's stakeholders individually for an hour, fielding questions and making their case for the position.

"We thought that it was critically important that the students, the alumni, the faculty and staff have the opportunity to interact and dialogue with all of the candidates," Hudson said.  "It takes all of us to ensure that there is success here at the University."

The candidates were asked relevant questions on topics ranging from student welfare and housing to increasing student enrollment, recruiting faculty, executive team building, employee assessments and pay, academic initiatives, developing and sustaining the University's physical landscape, fundraising, and developing an effective relationship with the Board of Trustees.

"We're looking for a visionary, someone that can provide some stability for the University and help to alleviate some of the financial challenges that the University is facing. We want to select a president who will work to increase our enrollment and retention rates. The next president of this University will be expected to be student centered and one who will provide the leadership that is needed to advance Alabama State University's mission of educational excellence," Hudson added.

Hudson said there is no definite timeline for a final decision to be made.
