Coahoma gearing up to "3-peat" Retool Your School Win

Last year, Coahoma Community College won its second consecutive The Home Depot Retool Your School competitive grant award, totaling $50,000.

The institution used the funds to construct and renovate several indoor spaces, maximizing and enhancing the on-campus student experience. From the erection of pergolas to the refreshing of student-centered spaces, Coahoma has worked to utilize these extraordinary and transformative opportunities effectively.

According to the competition website, to deepen its commitment to HBCUs, The Home Depot is increasing its support of HBCUs by investing $1 million in campus improvement grants across 30 schools. Thirty campus improvement grants will be awarded based on consumer voting. One grant for the Campaign of the Year Award will be awarded to the school whose campaign proves to be most original, innovative, and particularly effective.

Karen Woods-Done, director of the Division of Student Engagement, credits the previous wins to a responsive and active campus community and external base. She sees their continued support as the key in the over 70-year-old institution's chances of capturing a third consecutive win.

"We are going for the 3-peat," Woods-Done exclaimed! "Tiger Nation, it is with your unending support that we were able to tweet, IG, and hashtag CCC to a 3-time win with The Home Depot. With these funds, we have been able to make tremendous strides in beautifying our campus."

Woods-Done reflected on the voting process, by which participants pushed Coahoma past the finish line. Because of those efforts, she is proud of how CCC was able to utilize the funds in the best interests of the student population.

"We were able to construct two outdoor pavilions and created a space for students to sit and study on the lawn in front of the multiplex buildings. Additionally, we've been able to outfit furnishings for several places around campus to make the campus more aesthetically appealing," said Woods-Done. "These are projects we would not have been able to complete without you. We need you. We need your Twitter, IG, and hashtag fingers."

The voting period begins on Monday, February 15, 2021, - March 15, 2021. Winners will be announced on April 5, 2021.

Coahoma supporters are asked to aid the institution in securing a winning status by using the hashtag #Coahoma_RYS21. The institution has planned a number of initiatives to energize its campus community and external stakeholders.

Voting often matters and played a significant role in Coahoma securing wins in 2019 and 2020. The cumulative voting score comprises all votes received through retoolyourschool.com, social media through Twitter and Instagram using the designated hashtag, and sponsored events during the voting phase.

Unlike previous competition years, every week during the voting period, HBCUs can participate in challenges to earn a total of 185,000 extra votes, potentially getting Coahoma even closer to its share of $1,000,000! Starting Monday, February 15, you can find more information about the challenges on official Coahoma social media and retoolyourschool.comhttp://coahomacc.edu/news/News-Articles/Spring-2021/retoolyourschool.com.

"Let's get going! We are Tiger Nation, and we are all in for the 3-peat. The hashtag is #Coahoma_RYS21. We ask that you share a post whenever you see these hashtags," Woods-Done added.
