Howard University Named to Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service

Howard University was named to the 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, recognition that reflects the Capstone's unwavering commitment to service.
"We are truly honored by this recognition. The Howard University community, including our faculty, students, staff and alumni, continue to embody our core values and commitment to truth and service," said Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick.
The President's Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal award an institution can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement. "With Distinction" is awarded to applicants that display strong levels of institutional commitment and that provide a compelling case for partnerships that produce measurable impact in the community.
Howard University was honored for developing interfaith/community service programs, including the ground-breaking Alternative Spring Break program, the Faith & Ethics in the Workplace Interfaith Discussion Series, and the annual Thanksgiving Diner Service Meal. The centerpiece was the 2013 Alternative Spring Break project's mobilization of 340 students for volunteer teams in Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and in Haiti. Students served 880 meals, 335 health screenings, tutored 1,700 schoolchildren, and collected 3,800 signatures for anti-violence petitions.
Alternative Spring Break grew into its current form after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. The tragedy galvanized hundreds of Howard students to take part in community rebuilding efforts. Alternative Spring Break has served as a model for college projects that have sprouted up on campuses throughout the country. The ASB program is coordinated through the Office of the Dean of Chapel with significant institutional support from the Office of the President.
In congratulating the winners, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, "There's no greater satisfaction than service to others. I am delighted to see that so many young people, despite their religious beliefs and backgrounds, have pledged to work together to help solve some of their communities' challenges."
Throughout its history, Howard University has demonstrated an ability to mobilize resources to counter social problems in the United States and around the world. The Howard University School of Law was recently ranked as one of the top 20 schools in the nation for producing public service graduates. Howard was also ranked this year as among the nation's top producers of Peace Corps volunteers.
