Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating the National Association of Colored Women Clubs.  Mary Church Terrell and Josephine Ruffin were its two leading members.  The association's intention was to "furnish evidence of the moral, mental and material progress made by people of color through the efforts of our women." Established in 1896, membership had grown to 300,000 nationwide by 1918.

CALL FOR APPLICANTS - HBCU Library Alliance Exchange Program

I'm pleased to announce a call for applicants for the HBCU Library Alliance Exchange Program. This program focuses on the development of emerging leaders at HBCU libraries.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has provided funding for a fourth and final round of this progressive program. Six HBCU librarians will collaborate  with HBCU librarians or ASERL librarians to address projects of strategic importance to the HBCU library.

The Exchange program begins with a day-long visit to the HBCU library site. This initial visit allows the Exchange team members time to discuss the project plan and to begin developing the schedule for the Exchange visit.

The schedule for the Exchange will be designed by the project participants, based on the needs of the individuals involved and the type of work to be completed.

This is an AWESOME opportunity for Exchange librarians to gain insight into the "workings" of their respective libraries and work with project partners to achieve the desired Exchange project outcome. Grant funding from the Mellon Foundation covers the cost of travel, lodging and meals for participants during the exchanges.  HBCU Library Alliance Board Chair Mary Jo Fayoyin, ASERL Executive Director John Burger, and I will make selection decisions.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Exchange Program must have completed participation in one of the previous HBCU Library Alliance Leadership Institutes or a scholar in Leadership Institute IV.

Leadership III Exchange Experience - Maud Mundava, Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library (GA)

"It was such an honor to be selected to participate in the Exchange Program. The exchange experience helped to enhance my skills in technology, which was in line with my project, "Incorporating Emerging Technology Tools into Instruction." I was matched with George Mason University (VA)  for this project. While at George Mason, I had the opportunity to learn more about digital storytelling, how to create effective tutorials using Captivate and the use of Blackboard to teach online. The project also provided  me with access to Lynda.com, which is an online training library that provides access to courses such as web design and graphic design; all organized by subject software.  In all, it was an eye opener and great opportunity to network and build long-lasting relationships with other librarians!"

HBCU Participant Responsibilities

  1. Designate a project of strategic importance to the library that will be the focus of the exchange with the partner library. Project submissions are final and descriptions must include specific goals and objectives and the current status of the strategic issue within the library.

  2. Complete the attached application.

  3. Secure a written letter of support from your library director for your participation in this program and toward the completion of the project including permission to be on leave from your library duties during the exchange.

  4. Cooperate in completing needed paperwork for travel.

  5. Host the partner library for an initial planning meeting at the HBCU library. This meeting provides an opportunity to assist in the development of your Exchange visit schedule.

  6. Maintain a daily journal to detail lessons learned, meetings/activities attended, and other pertinent information about the exchange.

  7. Shadow your  host to meetings with senior library staff, university-level administrators, and others to observe problem-solving and decision-making techniques and strategies.

  8. Deliver a detailed report on the Exchange to HBCU Library Alliance Executive Director Sandra Phoenix.
    Selection Criteria

  9. Potential for leadership as demonstrated by your past record of achievement.

  10. Ability to articulate the leadership need in regard to the strategic area identified as the focus of the exchange.

  11. History of creative contribution to organizational problem-solving.

  12. Experience in effective engagement within and outside of the library to improve library service.

Deadlines for participating

  1. HBCU librarians must complete the attached application and submit all materials by Wednesday, August 15, 2012.
  2. Matches will be announced in late August. Selected HBCU librarians will meet their exchange partner prior to the exchange visit.
  3. The exchanges will take place at the host libraries between September 2012 and  February 2013.
