Greetings Colleagues,

Continue to practice an abundance of caution as you prepare for holiday activities.  I have exciting news to share!

The HBCU Library Alliance and CLIR have received a $75,000 planning grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the project Creating Access to HBCU Library Alliance Archives: Needs, Capacity, and Technical Planning. This project will identify common barriers and shared visions for creating access to historic collections held by libraries at HBCUs. A major goal of this project is to establish the foundation to improve access to the significant, unique archival collections at HBCUs. Project activities begin this month.
Follow this link https://www.clir.org/2020/11/hbcu-library-alliance-and-clir-receive-grant/ to the press release and this link https://youtu.be/zqnInqTjC5w to my brief YouTube video announcing the award.

Major project activities are:

  1. a series of online focus groups with library directors and deans at HBCU Library Alliance institutions about the significance of institutional archives and related needs and aspirations; and

  2. a series of in-depth interviews about special collections and archival holdings, technical capacity, and researcher needs with a select group of library staff (archivists, systems librarians, and IT specialists) and faculty at five HBCU Library Alliance institutions.

Project outcomes are:

  1. a public report of the findings of the focus group conversations that outlines shared and diverging values, priorities, and needs among the HBCU Library Alliance members' leadership, and

  2. an internal report that includes a set of technical requirements and user profiles that could inform the design of shared technical infrastructure that would suit the needs and priorities of member institutions.

Project Team

This project team includes a focus group facilitator and consulting interviewer. Follow this link https://www.clir.org/work-at-clir/ for project team descriptions and share as appropriate.

The HBCU Library Alliance is pleased to be in partnership with CLIR to improve access to HBCU collections!

Respectfully,

Sandra
