Alabama State University News May 22, 2020 ASU Offers Incoming Students Virtual College Experience Alabama State University has launched a new initiative to help prospective students learn more about the admissions process. Incoming transfer or freshman students can learn about applications and admission criteria, and much more by tuning in to Alabama State University's new online What's Up Wednesday, which are live social media sessions designed to provide prospective students with an opportunity to Learn Information Vital to Enrollment (L.I.V.E.). Students, alumni and friends are encouraged to log in to ASU's social media pages (Instagram - asu_admission or Facebook - @asuadmissions) at 1 p.m. (CST) each Wednesday where various University departments will share information. "As colleges and universities nationwide shift to online classes in an attempt to curtail the spread of COVID-19 virus, the usual college tours have been upended," said Freddie Williams Jr., director of Admissions and Recruitment. "Students traditionally were able to come in during a campus tour and talk with people about some of the same things that we we'll be covering on these L.I.V.E. sessions. We thought by going virtual, students will have the opportunity to learn information vital to their enrollment in the fall." Williams noted that the virtual sessions will include opportunities for live Q&As. "L.I.V.E. provides an alternate opportunity for students to get to know ASU from afar," Williams said. "With these sessions, students actually have the person that's in charge of whatever area we are covering that day so they can ask their direct questions to that subject-matter expert." Williams emphasized that the virtual initiative is especially important for incoming students. "They graduated from high school without a graduation; they are getting ready to come to orientation that will be online, so they have really been touched by the shutdown. We wanted to ensure these L.I.V.E. events were catered to them," Williams added. Williams pointed out that the University's L.I.V.E. sessions provide a unique opportunity for the University to stay connected to prospective students. "We really miss interacting with our students. This online format gives us the opportunity to have some live interaction even though it's virtual. We are happy to be able to engage with the students in a way that they can get the information they need," Williams remarked.
