Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating Constance Baker Motley, who was born on September 14, 1921 in New Haven, Connecticut, the ninth of twelve children born to parents who emigrated from the West Indies. She became the first African-American woman accepted at Columbia Law School, the first African-American woman elected to the New York Senate, the first woman and the first African-American woman to hold the position of Manhattan Borough President, and the first African-American woman appointed to serve as a federal district judge. Motley continued to serve as a federal judge until her death in 2005.

Effective Web 2.0 Tools used for Flipping Library Instruction
Instructor: Melinda Livas, Distance Services Librarian, C. G. O'Kelly Library, Winston-Salem State University (NC)

This one-hour session expands on Melinda's previous session and highlights effective Web 2.0 tools librarians can use to help them Flip their library instruction classes. The Flipped Classroom model takes place when traditional teaching methods are inverted; content is accessed online, outside of the classroom; lectures are replaced with videos and podcasts; homework takes place in the classroom. During the session, Melinda will demonstrate how to use these Web 2.0 tools.

Learning Objectives:

  •   Attendees will learn how to use several engaging Web 2.0 tools to design effective class content that will foster an active learning and collaborative environment; conducive for face-to-face and online library instruction.
    
  •   Attendees will leave the session with concrete examples of how to implement these Web 2.0 tools into effective instruction assignments.

Beyond the Library: Developing Information Literacy Skills Throughout the Entire Semester
Instructors: Marilyn Gibbs, Library Director, Claflin University (SC), Morgan Montgomery, Reference Librarian, Claflin University (SC)

This one-hour webinar will describe how Claflin University's H.V. Manning Library has partnered with the Freshmen College and Panther STEPS to ensure that students have opportunities to develop Information Literacy skills outside the library. It will present  examples of strategies that have fostered student engagement throughout the entire semester.

By the end of this class participants will be able to:

  1.   Define roles of  the library and faculty in facilitating Information Literacy
    
  2.   Define and understand the purpose of the Embedded Librarian
    
  3.   Identify several examples of library services and strategies utilized to engage students.
    

Suggested Audience: Anyone interested in Information Literacy, Reference Services, Outreach Services, Student Engagement, First Year Student Experience, and Faculty Collaboration with libraries.
