I trust you're well today. Today I'm celebrating Bernard Anthony Harris, Jr., the first African Americanhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American to perform an extra-vehicular activityhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extra-vehicular_activity during the second of his two Space Shuttlehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Program flights. Harris was born on June 26, 1956 in Temple, Texas.
As a 1974 graduate of Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, Texashttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Antonio,_Texas, Harris was actively involved in science fairs, book clubs and other school activities. He received a B.S.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Science degree in biology from University of Houstonhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Houston in 1978. He earned his MDhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Medicine degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Centerhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Tech_University_Health_Sciences_Center School of Medicine in 1982 and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinichttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayo_Clinic in 1985.
Dr. Harris has been recognized several times by NASA and other organizations for his professional and academic achievements. In 1996 he received an honorary doctoratehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorary_doctorate from the Morehouse Collegehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morehouse_College School of Medicine. He later received honorary doctorates from Stonybrook Universityhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonybrook_University, New Jersey Institute of Technologyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_Institute_of_Technology, and the University of Houstonhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Houston. He has also received a NASA Space flight medal, a NASA Award of Merit, a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the 2000 Horatio Alger Award.
