Alabama State University News June 4, 2020 ASU Helps COVID-19 Relief with Donation of $7,000 Honda All-Stars Award to Local Charities! Each year, an elite group of Alabama State University students competes in the national Honda Campus All-Stars academic program. The event showcases the academic prowess of some of the best and brightest students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) from across the nation. For the first time in many years, the annual competition was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Those teams that were slated to be part of the 2020 competition were given awards of $7,000. With the approval of President Quinton T. Ross Jr., Alabama State University's team has elected to donate their "winnings" to two Montgomery-area charities to help with ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts. "Alabama State University wishes to thank the Honda Campus All-Stars program for all it does to support ASU and other HBCUs across the United States," Ross said. "Since our students were not able to compete this year, being able to donate to local charities allows ASU and Honda to extend our partnership into the community and help programs that provide various forms of COVID-19 relief." The Y-Achievers, an outreach program for at-risk teenagers sponsored by the Montgomery-area Y.M.C.A., and Project H.E.L.P. USA/MRC, a medical, lifestyle and health outreach organization staffed with physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals, will share the $7,000 award. The selection process was spearheaded by the University's Office of Development. "The organizations were chosen because of their commitment to serving local residents in need during the coronavirus pandemic," said Jennifer Anderson, ASU's director of Development and executive director of the ASU Foundation. "We are excited to have another opportunity to partner with a corporation such as Honda, especially in an effort that supports the President's CommUniversity initiative."
