2019 Conference on Inclusion & Diversity in LIS (CIDLIS)http://cidlis.umd.edu/ - November 1, 9a-4p
Registration is now open for CIDLIS. Now in its 11th year, the UMD iSchool is thrilled to again host this important event. This year's theme is Everyone counts: Civic engagement among vulnerable communities. We will discuss the role of libraries in promoting voter and census participation among all hard-to-reach communities. As we well know, 2020 is poised to be a critical year in terms of our nation's democracy. Delivering the keynote address will be Dr. Clara M. Chu of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign's Project Welcome Program. If you would like to present during CIDLIS, the proposal deadline is September 6th. We welcome ideashttps://cidlis.umd.edu/call-for-proposals/ on ethical frameworks or case studies for encouraging civic engagement, methods for improving civic knowledge among LIS professionals, and more.

James Partridge Outstanding African American Information Professional Awardhttp://cidlis.umd.edu/patridgeaward/
Also, nominations are open for the 2019 James Partridge Outstanding African American Information Professional Award which will again be presented during CIDLIS. Since 1998, the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park and the Citizens for Maryland Libraries (CML)https://citizensformarylandlibraries.org/Partridge have presented the award to exemplary but unsung library leaders. The award recognizes the legacy of James Partridge, an outstanding librarian who led the Maryland Division of Libraries Services. A nominee must, like James Partridge, reflect the highest ideals of the library/information profession including career-long dedicated service, leadership, and a commitment to the empowerment of those whom they serve. Please consider nominating a colleague, collaborator, mentor, or yourself. Visit the website for more eligibility and selection criteria. Nomination letters should be sent to cidlis.umd@gmail.commailto:cidlis.umd@gmail.comby October 1st. Last year's recipient was fellow HBCU librarian, Loretta Partham of the Atlanta University Center's Robert Woodruff consortium library.

Counted In pre-conference forum - October 31, 9a-4p
We also received an IMLS grant to host a pre-conference event entitled Counted In Forum on Libraries, Census 2020 and New Americanshttps://cidlis.umd.edu/preconference/. We are accepting applications until September 10, 2019. We definitely want to include HBCUs in this conversation, what with the increase in international and/or immigrant students at HBCUs. The goal of the Counted In Forum is to 1.) Discuss challenges and efforts toward promoting census participation among immigrant communities and 2.) Participate in a design-thinking workshop to synthesize recommendations for library training and marketing material. The outcomes and deliverables will be 1.) A toolkit containing library marketing templates (e.g., free, downloadable, and customizable flyers, banners, posters) and resources and 2.) Webinars on recommendations for outreach to immigrant communities.
