Lively CCC Orators Earn Cheers From Packed House
When nine student orators at Coahoma Community College competed in a lively Black History Month activity in Whiteside Lecture Hall Thursday morning, they were greeted with cheers from a packed house with standing room only.
Speeches ranged from original compositions to the oratory recreations of celebrities.
Included were Danirus Johnson's rendition of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech; the "Yes We Can" address by President Barack Obama presented by Chris Tanner; and Shereika Boyd's presentation of Michelle Obama's talk urging South African women to become active: "We don't have time to sit back and wait."
Ladarionh Williams became Malcolm X ; Angela Lackey prescribed "The Perfect Recipe" embodied in CCC's president: Dr. Vivian Presley, and Jasmine Cleark practically sang out, "A Beautiful Blend: Mocha, Black, Light-Skin, Caramel, and Chocolate."
Miranda Davis praised African American women who achieved "firsts;" Charnelle Clay promoted equal rights for women, and Marquon Lee extolled African American women as "the crown jewels."
Judged by a panel of faculty, administrators, and staff, the winners were Chris Tanner, first; Angela Lackey, second; and Jasmine Cleark, third.
Student Paul Medders opened the program with a "Super Cool" poem; Tierra Washington of Clarksdale drew applause with a creative dance; Angela Thornton narrated "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou, and the Women's Ensemble Women's including Kenswa Harry, Latiana Collins, Quesha Thomas, Annricka Neal, and Angela Lackey presented musical selections.
