Voorhees College News November 5, 2015 Voorhees raises $10,000 during UNCF Corporate and Community Luncheon During the second Voorhees College Corporate and Community Luncheon held on Oct. 21, the institution raised $10,000 toward United Negro College Fund (UNCF) scholarships for students. The purpose of the luncheon was to bring together corporate and community leaders in Bamberg County and surrounding areas to support Voorhees' mission of providing a quality education to students. The luncheon is one of the institution's events in support of UNCF. UNCF is the nation's largest and most effective minority education organization enabling more than 60,000 students each year to attend college. Voorhees is one of 37 UNCF institutions. During the luncheon, sophomore mass communication majors, Chantel Chandler and Daquan Ellison, were recognized as UNCF scholarship recipients. Both students were highlighted and had a chance to tell their story about how receiving scholarships personally benefitted them. "I was accepted into all of my college choices; however, I had no idea how I would be able to afford a college education," said Chandler, a native of Wilmington, Del. "With persistence and determination, I was finally offered a full academic scholarship from Voorhees College that would change my life forever." Ellison, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., said that he has accomplished much in his field because of the faculty and staff at Voorhees. "At Voorhees, everyone knows everyone, and the faculty and staff are eager to go above and beyond for students. I love Voorhees College and would never trade it for anything in the world." Since enrolling at Voorhees, Ellison has secured an internship with HOT 98.1 FM in Greenville, S.C., where he is currently the youngest on-air personality. In addition, Ellison is the youngest executive producer at WACH-FOX in Columbia, S.C., where he produces the Jeffrey Lampkins Show. At the end of the luncheon, Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement Teesa Brunson presented a $10,000 check to President Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr. for funds raised from the luncheon. "We appreciate our sponsors and supporters of this event for making this possible," said Brunson. "Their loyal and dedicated support continually enable us to change the minds and lives of our students."
