Fort Valley State University News February 22, 2016 FVSU to celebrate America Saves Week<http://www.fvsu.edu/fvsu-celebrate-america-saves-week/> Persons interested in saving money and achieving financial freedom can look to Fort Valley State University's Cooperative Extension Program for advice. >From Feb. 22-27, FVSU's Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is observing America Saves Week. This is an annual event to persuade, encourage and motivate individuals, families and communities to take financial action in building wealth through saving money and reducing debt. All activities are free and open to the public, and college students are urged to attend. Dr. Vivian Fluellen, FVSU's FCS chair, said the event is for all individuals including young adults, college students and the general public. "We are encouraging individuals to take the pledge to save. This week will hopefully challenge some to place their tax refund into savings, or take other positive wealth-building action during America Saves Week," Fluellen said. The week's activities will start on Feb. 23 at 8:30 a.m. in Myers Hall with the reading of a proclamation by Fort Valley Mayor Barbara Williams. "Activities scheduled for the remainder of the week include seminars on setting financial goals, tips to help you reach your financial goals, 54 ways to save, saving for emergencies and getting the most from your tax refund," Fluellen said. The FVSU professor added that FCS students will man an exhibit in the Student Center on Feb. 24 to encourage faculty, staff and students to take the pledge to save and receive tips on ways to save. Individuals can also stop by Myers Hall to receive the 2016 Family Resource Management Calendar developed to help with budgeting. Since 2007, America Saves and the American Savings Education Council, observe America Saves Week. It presents an avenue for various organizations to promote the benefits of effective savings and provides an opportunity for individuals to assess their saving methods.
