Hampton University School of Pharmacy Receives a $2.6 Million Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration
The Hampton University School of Pharmacy (HUSOP) received a $2.6 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to provide scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds that have financial need in order to increase diversity in the health workforce.
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recently announced more than $149 million in new awards through 12 workforce programs to prepare the next generation of skilled, diverse primary care providers to serve communities in need across the country.
HUSOP received the grant through one of these 12 workforce programs - The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS). A total of $42.3 million was awarded under this program, which will enable 78 health professions schools
HRSA's education and training grants support the development of a workforce that can meet 21st century needs through an emphasis on diversity, distribution of clinicians, and quality services that encourage innovative team-based and interprofessional approaches.
"The School of Pharmacy is extremely pleased to receive this grant, which will allow us to provide financial assistance to deserving, disadvantaged students and build on our national leadership role in the production of underrepresented pharmacists." said Dr. Wayne T. Harris, Dean of the HUSOP and Project Director for this SDS grant.
Awardees under this program must be economically or environmentally disadvantaged, full-time pharmacy students who also meet established academic requirements. The funds will be awarded over a four-year project period, subject to availability.
