Fisk University Awarded $575,000 from National Science Foundation
The Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $575K to Fisk University to develop a model that broadens the participation of women, namely of African-American, Hispanic and Native American descent, from postdoctoral professionals into tenured faculty positions in the Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology (STEM) areas. The funding will also include the development of faculty mentoring programs and the development of scholarly initiatives leading to highly competitive faculty in the STEM areas.
"We are honored to receive this award and I congratulate our research team for their efforts in coordinating their skills, experiences, and resources to contribute to practical solutions that could be adopted by other institutions" said Dr. Rodney Hanley, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "This award from the National Science Foundation is also recognition of the successes of the Fisk-Vanderbilt Masters-to-Ph.D. Bridge Program as a national leader in the production of women and underrepresented minorities earning Ph.D.'s.  We will continue to work with our partners as we expand and improve the representation of minorities within the postdoctoral and faculty ranks pipeline."
The funding is part of a five-year, $2 million award made to a consortium led by Vanderbilt University with partners including Fisk University, Wake Forest University, and the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Arnold Burger will serve as Fisk's principal investigator, while Dr. Lee Limbird and Dr. Kelly Holley-Bockelmann will serve as co-principal investigators.
