Drs. Berlin & Reba Hollingsworth Establish Endowed Scholarship

Longtime Delaware State University alumni supporters Drs. Berlin N. and Reba R. Hollingsworth recently presented Dr. Harry L. Williams a display check representing a $10,000 contribution to create the Dr. Berlin N. and Dr. Reba R. Hollingsworth Endowed Scholarship.

Undergraduate DSU students from rising freshmen to seniors with at least a 2.75 GPA and demonstrated financial need will be eligible for the scholarships.

Dr. Berlin met his wife of nearly 67 years, the former Reba Ross, while they were working summer jobs in Asbury Park, N.J. In 1947, Dr. Reba's junior year at then-Delaware State College, they were married.

Dr. Berlin matriculated a few years later at Delaware State, earning a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1967. After he graduated, he became the first manager of the school's student center. Inspired by the dedicated faculty and the family atmosphere, Dr. Berlin went on to spend 22 years in the public school system.

Dr. Reba's experiences as a student on the Delaware State campus span eight years, first as a student and alum of the laboratory high school, and later as a student and alum of the college, classes of 1945 and 1949 respectively. Upon earning her degree, she went on to careers as a high school teacher, guidance counselor and administrator. She is currently in business with her husband, teaching and counseling organizations on parliamentary procedures and time management.

The Hollingsworths say that Delaware State provided them with a good basic education and gave them the confidence to know that they could compete with anyone, anywhere in the world. They also say that they have an obligation to give back to their alma mater and encourage other alums and friends to do the same.

Together, the Hollingsworths have contributed more than $23,000 to Delaware State over the years.
