Construction Continues to Change Face of ASU
The sights and sounds of construction can be found all around the Alabama State University campus, as the University is well on its way to completing the first phase of an extensive transformation.

Since 2007 the Alabama State University's campus has continued to undergo an extensive makeover, including infrastructure improvements, renovations, and new academic facilities. The construction is part of a five-phase, $600 million plan projected to be completed in 2035.
Construction workers continue to swarm the campus, working around the clock to finish the last of several first-phase projects.
Kippy Tate, vice president of Building and Grounds, said the University is on schedule to have the first phase completed in 2012.
"We've customized the Master Plan to suit the needs of present and future ASU students," Tate said. "It is exciting to see where we're heading."
Several projects currently are underway at various locations across campus. Here is a quick look at some of them:
The Levi Watkins Learning Center
The Learning Center will house an Internet Café, meeting rooms, a small auditorium and study rooms that cater to undergraduate and graduate students. The renovations also will include a courtyard and an enlarged area to house the growing collection of writings pertaining to the Civil Rights Movement.
Cost: about $20 million
Size: addition of 60,500 square feet to the existing 87,000-square-foot building.
Projected completion: July 2011
The Football Complex
The facility, located at Hornet Stadium, will house coaches' offices, team rooms, locker rooms and training rooms.
Cost: about $20 million
Size: 28,000 sq. ft.
Projected completion: July 2011
Two New Residence Halls
Each building will have suite-style rooms, computer labs, group study rooms, common areas and laundry facilities.
Cost: $15 million
Size: 80,000 square feet each and will accommodate 500 students
Projected completion: Scheduled to be open Aug. 1, 2011. Student housing applications now are being accepted online.
New Student Services Center and Amphitheatre
The Center is one of the major projects for phase one. It will be a one-stop location for student services and will house registration, admissions, student services, housing and S.G.A. offices. The Center also will have a cyber café, bookstore, post office, computer lab, food court, ballroom and theater.
Cost: $25 million
Size: 80,000 square foot facility.
Projected completion: spring 2012
Football Stadium
The stadium will be located adjacent to the north Hall Street entranceway and run at a slight angle alongside I-85. The scoreboard end zone, nearest I-85, will be situated facing to the northwest. The main entrance will front Hall Street and eventually be linked to a campus-wide pedestrian corridor. Plans call for luxury suites, lounge boxes, premium seating and general admission seating.
Cost: about $50 million
Size: 26,500-seats
Projected completion: Put Nov. 22, 2012, in your memory bank because that will be the day ASU's Hornets take on Tuskegee University's Golden Tigers in the inaugural Turkey Day Classic on ASU's campus.
