Virginia State University News August 4, 2017 Board of Visitors recognized for Leadership Over the past few months, some members of the Virginia State University (VSU) Board of Visitors have been appointed to help build a new economy in Virginia or invited to speak in Paris and even honored for their love of improving the wealth and happiness of others. "I congratulate Board of Visitors Richardson, Dance and Hill on their outstanding accomplishments," VSU President Makola M. Abdullah, Ph.D. said. "The road ahead for Virginia State University is bright because of the wealth of experience, dedication and extraordinary skills of our Board of Visitors." Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe announced additional appointments to his Virginia Economic Development Partnership Board of Directors. One of the appointees was VSU Board of Visitor Xavier Richardson. Richardson, along with the other appointees, will join Gov. McAuliffe's effort to focus on finding common ground with members of both parties on issues that will build a new Virginia economy and create more jobs across the Commonwealth. Currently, Richardson serves as the executive vice president for Corporate Development and Community Affairs for Mary Washington Healthcare in Fredericksburg, Va. In this capacity, he also serves as the President of Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital Foundations. Richardson holds a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School where he was awarded the General Motors Fellowship for second-year studies. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a National Achievement Scholar. Board of Visitor Daryl Dance, Ph.D., was invited to speak at the Art and Craft of Grafting in Jamaica Kincaid's Works at the Université Paris 8 and Université Paris IV Sorbonne, in Paris, France. Dance, who was the first black female student in the Department of English at the University of Richmond, has authored and contributed to numerous publications. Some of Dance's works include From My People: 400 Years of African American Folklore; Honey, Hush! An Anthology of African American Women's Humor; Long Gone: The Mecklenburg Six and the Theme of Escape in Black Folklore; and Shuckin' and Jivin': Folklore from Contemporary Black Americans. Dance has given more than 200 lectures at universities and more than 150 lectures and presentations to community organizations, libraries, prisons and churches. Dr. Dance received her undergraduate and master's degree in English from Virginia State College (now University), and her doctorate from the University of Richmond with additional study at the University of Virginia and Columbia University. Board of Visitor Charlie Hill was the 2017 recipient of the Humanitarian Award at the 25th Annual Black Tie Gala sponsored by the 100 Black Men Virginia Peninsula Chapter. Visitor Hill and his wife, Golden, are the co-founders for the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum and the Community Free Clinic of Newport News, Va. This is not the first time Hill has been recognized for his love of helping others. Last year, Hill was awarded the City of Hampton's Distinguished Citizen Medal for his extraordinary service to Hampton, Virginia in regards to minority men's health. Hill also started the Hill Leadership Institute at VSU. The aim of the Institute is to develop world-class leaders for the global workforce. Mr. Hill has served on several boards, civic and business groups to include the Crispus Attucks Cultural Center; the Corporate Advisory Board of Darden Graduate School of Business at UVA; the INROADS Mid-Atlantic Regional Board of Directors; the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Advisory Council of Hampton Roads, Virginia; the Virginia Health Care Foundation; and the National Association of Minorities in Cable Hall of Fame.
