Winston-Salem State University News October 22, 2013 WSSU's Anderson Earns UNC's Bowles Staff Service Award Rudy Anderson, director of internal communications at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), was selected to receive the 2013 Erskine Bowles Staff Service Award from the UNC Staff Assembly. The award is given annually to a staff member in the UNC system whose accomplishments illustrate the goals Erskine Bowles exemplified during his tenure as UNC president and that support the University's mission of public service. It was presented October 15 at the Staff Assembly meeting in Chapel Hill. Anderson has worked in WSSU's office of marketing and communications since 1997. Previously, he was a special educator in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for five years and was with WXII-TV for 11 years as a reporter and then assignment editor. "Mr. Anderson has shown his dedication to the development of our future with no less than a spirit of excellence," said Tonya Amos, president of the WSSU Staff Senate who nominated Anderson for the award. "He presents himself with an enthusiastic commitment for the greater cause of humanity through service, leadership and character." At WSSU, Anderson is a founding mentor of the university's Real Men Teach Program that provides support and encouragement for male students entering the teaching profession. He is also a founding member of the Simon's Green Acre Community Garden, which has provided more than 5,000 pounds of produce for people and organizations throughout the community. A former chair for the WSSU Arts Council Campaign Committee and the WSSU SPA Grievance Committee, Anderson has been a committee member and volunteer for the university's convocation and commencement programs, the WSSU Golf Classic, the CIAA Staff Committee and the WSSU Staff Senate Community Service Committee. He is also involved with the Writing in the Major Committee and the State Employees Combined Campaign Committee. Through his connection with the Greater Carver Road Network for Better Education, Anderson helped in the drive to keep Carver High School open when it was under threat of closure by a judge's order. Through his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, Inc., Anderson has served as a volunteer mentor at Easton Elementary School for five years and for seven years at Carver High School. He has also served on the board of directors for Exchange/S.C.A.N. and the Forsyth County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Anderson is a performer and public relations coordinator with the Twin City Choristers and is a performer and president of the board of directors for the Flonnie Anderson Theatrical Association. He also serves as Sunday School superintendent and president of the Men's Fellowship at Wentz Memorial United Church of Christ. SANDRA M.
