Tuskegee University News 1/11/2011 Tuskegee University appoints two postdoctoral fellows from Purdue University Tuskegee University's president, Dr. Gilbert L. Rochon has appointed Dr. Souleymane Fall and Dr. Thierno Thiam as postdoctoral fellows, effective January 3, 2011. Both scholars received their doctoral degrees from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and are expected to make significant contributions to interdisciplinary research at Tuskegee University. It is anticipated that Purdue and Tuskegee, as land grant universities, will intensify collaboration in research, instruction and engagement initiatives, both locally and globally. Dr. Souleymane Fall previously served as a Post Doctoral Fellow with Purdue University's Department of Agronomy and was a Professor of History and Geography at several high schools in Senegal. He received his doctorate from Purdue University's Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, specializing in Climatology, a Masters degree in Atmospheric Sciences and a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from North Carolina State University and both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Geography from Dakar University in Senegal. Dr. Fall is a former Fulbright Fellow and a specialist in GIS, having attained over 40 certificates from the Environmental Science Research Institute (ESRI). Among his other publications, Dr. Fall is first author on major articles published in the International Journal of Climatology, including "Temperature and Equivalent Temperature over the United States (1979-2005)" and "Impacts of Land Use Land Cover on Temperature Trends over the Continental United States: Assessment using the North American Regional Reanalysis," as well as articles in Natural Hazards and in Earth Interactions. Dr. Fall will be initiating an Automated Mapping/Facilities Management (AM/FM) implementation for Tuskegee University's entire 5,000 acre contiguous campus and will advise the local and regional government agencies with respect to development of an Enterprise GIS. Dr. Thierno Thiam joins Tuskegee University from the Institute for State Effectiveness (ISE) based in Washington D.C. The ISE blends conceptual thought, historical analysis and direct experience to rethink relations between citizen, state and market in the globalized world. His academic activities also span several major universities including Howard University where he taught the Graduate Seminar in Comparative Politics, the University of Maryland - College Park, where he taught the Politics of Africa and Purdue University where he taught courses in International Relations. He is the author of Political Leadership and the Quest for Unity and Development in Africa (Germany: VDM Verlag Publishing House, Ltd., 2009) and is currently collaborating on a book focusing on African Sustainable Development and Emerging Technologies, as first author. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science with a focus in International Relations and Comparative Politics from Purdue University. At Tuskegee, Dr. Thiam is teaching a directed reading in Institutional Transformations at the Department of History and Political Science and will be engaged in research in Political Science and International Development.
