CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY NAMES NEW CONTROLLER
Seasoned Auditor, CPA Brings Industry Expertise, Experience to Financial Operations
Clark Atlanta University (CAU) President Carlton E. Brown today announced the appointment of Edward H. Patrick as the University’s new associate vice president and
controller, effective immediately. Patrick, a certified public accountant, brings more than 18 years of experience to the position, more than seven of them as a controller and four as a member of Arthur Andersen’s Audit Division. He had served as a consultant at Clark Atlanta since April 2010.
In addition to consulting, Patrick currently serves as an adjunct professor of external auditing and managerial accounting at Atlanta’s Keller Graduate School of Business, and has received recognition for consistently high student evaluations. As CAU’s associate vice president and controller, he will be responsible for directing general accounting reporting and operations, grants and contracts accounting, general ledger systems, investments, bond issues, cash management, accounts payable, payroll, financial system security, and risk management operations. He also will oversee preparation of timely and accurate financial statements, management reports, federal income tax reporting, manage the University’s annual audit process, and evaluate and implement internal and cash management controls. He will report to the University’s Vice President for Finance and Business Affairs Lucille Maugé.
According to Maugé, “because of the broad scope of responsibilities and the specificity of technical skills required, the University conducted a tedious national search for a professional to fill this position. We are confident that, of all of the candidates, Edward Patrick possesses the breadth of experience and the mastery of the very highest industry standards to exact his duties with integrity, precision and a level of critical analysis and organizational effectiveness that will significantly advance progress already underway in these areas.”
Patrick, who earned a bachelor’s degree in math and sociology from Northwestern University, and a master’s degree in accountancy from DePaul University, began his professional career as a senior auditor with Arthur Andersen LLP in Chicago where his duties included process mapping to identify operational weaknesses, reviewing audit work papers, financial statements and schedules, as well as field training and planning. He received a Sequoia Award for Excellence in Mentoring while there.
Patrick has consulted for myriad clients—large and small, privately and publicly held, focusing on program audits and internal controls. He served as a liaison for four OMB A-133 program audits, two State special purpose local option sales tax audits and a financial statement audit for the Atlanta Public Schools. As a controller, he renegotiated bank interest rates that resulted in an annual cost reduction of $100,000. He also performed a lease/buy analysis that resulted in short-term expense reduction of $175,000 and a four-year projected reduction of $750,000. For GE Energy, built narratives and process maps to complement audit programs used to test the effectiveness of key internal controls.
“I am excited about continuing my work with Clark Atlanta, now on a permanent basis,” Patrick says. “The University is one of the nation’s most progressive research institutions and, more than its place in history, it is now advancing the frontiers of discovery, social justice and intellectual discourse into the future. To play a key role in creating and maintaining a business and financial environment that supports and elevates that agenda is a privilege and I look forward to accelerating momentum in these areas.”
