English Chair Dr. Reginald A. Bess Appointed to Serve on Federal Critical Language Scholarship Selection Committee

Dr. Reginald A. Bess, professor and chairman of the Department of English and Foreign Languages, has been elected to the Critical Language Scholarship Program Selection Committee.

The Critical Language Program Scholarship is a U.S. Department of State initiative which offers intensive summer language institutes for students in 13 critical foreign languages. The program offers students scholarships to study Arabic, Bangla, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Russian, and Urdu in the countries where those languages are spoken.

Bess will serve as a selection panelist to read and evaluate applications in Persian. Panelists will review applications and will meet in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 8 to conclude deliberations.

Prior to arriving Claflin last year, Bess was the chair of the Division of General Studieshttp://www.claflin.edu/claflin-news/2012/09/17/dr.-reginald-a.-bess-tapped-to-chair-department-of-english-and-foreign-languages at Morris College. He was also previously a professor and coordinator of minority affairs at Louisiana Scholar’s College and associate chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics at Grambling State University.

Bess has a Ph.D. in medieval German studies from The Ohio State University and a Masters of Arts degree from West Virginia State University. In addition, he holds masters degrees in liberal studies from Grambling State University and romance languages from Louisiana Tech University.
