Dean, Director, and Special Assistant to the President of West Virginia State University named to West Virginia Science and Research Council

Institute, WV - Dr. Orlando F. McMeans was recently appointed to the board of the Science and Research Council of West Virginia. Dr. McMeans is the Dean and Director of the West Virginia State University Gus R. Douglass Institute and serves as Special Assistant to the President of West Virginia State University for Research and Public Service.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin recognized his contribution to the state's scientific and research field and requested that he serve on the council. Dr. McMeans was appointed for a term ending on June 30, 2012.

"You are a valuable asset to the board as it makes decisions that will improve the lives of all West Virginians. We take enormous pride in our state, which is demonstrated by the number of citizens like you who dedicate their time and energy to public service," Governor Tomblin said of Dr. McMeans willingness to serve.

The West Virginia Science and Research Council was created in 2009 to increase the capacity of WV and state institutions of higher education to attract and implement competitive research funds and infrastructure. The Council promotes education at all levels in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It provides expertise and policy guidance in science and research to the state regarding programs such as the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), the West Virginia Research Trust Fund, and the Research Challenge Fund.

As a member of the Science and Research Council, Dr. McMeans will be involved in research collaboration among public and private institutions of higher education and private entities, while also assisting state policy makers regarding science and research initiatives, activities, and investments. This appointment is one of many ways Dr. McMeans is involved in the development and sustainability of research and outreach programs that will benefit WVSU and the state of West Virginia
