Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating Mary McLeod Bethune, founder and president of Bethune-Cookman College.  In 1935, McLeod Bethune received the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP, honored for speaking out against racism and injustice "in the South as well as in the North, without compromise or fear."

Three Free Live On-Line Webinars - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 7-9, 2:00 ET
Now What? Library Support for Faculty Research - Tuesday, July 7th, 2:00 ET

The Expanding Library Support for Faculty Research project is providing an opportunity to learn from faculty their needs and concerns regarding library support for faculty research and strategies to address those needs. As you are aware, research is a primary responsibility for academic faculty along with teaching. It is a requirement for most faculty tenure and promotion decisions as well as post-tenure review. Research contributes to a college's or university's reputation and funding.

Libraries were surveyed to determine their current services, capacity, and needs regarding faculty research support. Faculty were surveyed to gather information that can assist libraries in understanding faculty research interests, plans, challenges, and support needs.

The webinar will begin with a brief summary of the project's survey results.  It will continue as an interactive session by providing a list of faculty concerns and gathering your suggestions and input on library support to address these concerns.  The session will end with a greater understanding of faculty challenges along with suggestions and recommendations for faculty support.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, participants will have gained:

Understanding of the challenges facing faculty regarding library support services
Awareness of library capacity to provide faculty research support

Librarians involved in faculty research support and liaison librarians are suggested attendees.

Instructor

How Liaison Librarians "Earned It" (Respect) Through Engagement in Faculty Research - Wednesday, July 8th, 2:00 ET

Description:

"Librarians make it look like it's magic

They're never confused

They're so used to being used

They love it when faculty called unexpected

Cause Librarians are perfect
They're always worth it
And they deserve it
The way they work it
Cause they've earned it
they've earned it

Hey, hey"

The Weeknd.  "Earned It". Fifty Shades of Grey Soundtrack. CD. Republic. 2015.

Librarians continue to "earn it" - i.e. respect - by developing innovative ways to assist their faculty in improving teaching and learning and faculty research and scholarship.  An effective Library Liaison Program is just one way that librarians can use an active outreach approach to build relationships with faculty.  This webinar will describe components of an effective library liaison program which can enhance the library's reputation as the "Intellectual Heart" of the campus.

Learning Outcomes

Using research as the focus, participants will leave the webinar with the ability to:

  • Determine desirable attributes of librarians who are effective liaisons

  • Develop a liaison program tailored to their unique campus situation

Reference librarians and subject specialist librarians are suggested attendees.

Instructor

Mary Jo Fayoyin is the Dean of Library Services at Savannah State University. In addition to her duties as chief librarian, Ms. Fayoyin, who was promoted from Director to Dean in 2013, has as her responsibilities oversight of the Audio-Visual Center, Archives, and Coordinator of Distance Learning.  Earlier career appointments include Director of Library Services (Waycross College); tenured faculty member and coordinator Library Media Education, School of Education, Fairmont State University; and Catalog Librarian, Fairmont State University.

In Motion: Providing Faculty Research Support - Thursday, July 9, 2:00 ET
Description

Supporting research is one of the guiding principles in library services, along with equality of access and information literacy instruction.  By understanding and supporting the changing research needs of the faculty, librarians support the university's commitment to increasing knowledge and scholarship and enhancing the value of the library.
Each library's approach to providing research support is unique to their university and faculty needs.  Many libraries use liaison librarians, or subject specialist, also referred to as subject librarians.  Using subject specialists as liaison librarians is not new, however, the requirements of the role have become more complex and less defined. While a broader and more engaged role is emerging, more discussion is needed about the ability to provide faculty what they need. Thus it requires asking:  Are library liaisons providing the research support faculty need, and what can we do to better assist faculty? Additionally, what attributes and skills are currently needed of liaisons librarians or may be needed in the future? The main goal of the webinar is to encourage dialogue between librarians and faculty regarding research support.
Librarians and faculty are suggested attendees.
Learning Outcomes
Librarians should leave the webinar with increased knowledge of what faculty require to support their research endeavors.
Faculty should leave the webinar with better awareness of what liaisons librarians have to offer faculty.
