Alabama State University News April 9, 2015 Plans Developed for Celebration of 60th Anniversary of Bus Boycott Alabama State University is partnering with a nationally recognized civil rights activist in developing plans for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. "When Mrs. Doris Crenshaw reached out to ASU about a partnership to commemorate this historic event, the University responded immediately," said Zillah M. Fluker, ASU's vice president for Institutional Advancement. "Alabama State University's role in the Bus Boycott is well documented, and we felt it appropriate not only to work with someone of Mrs. Crenshaw's stature in the Civil Rights Movement, but also to be at the forefront of the organization of the commemoration of this historic event." ASU was at the heart of many of the events leading up to and surrounding the Bus Boycott. Instructor Joann Robinson and a group of her students are credited with making the copies of the flyer announcing the boycott on a mimeograph machine in the basement of Councill Hall. ASU students and employees helped to distribute the flyers and spread the word across Montgomery to boycott city transportation in the wake of the arrest of Rosa Parks. The University's National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture hosts an annual event to commemorate the mass rallies that were held over the duration of the boycott. For the 60th anniversary, a weeklong schedule of events is planned beginning on December 1. "Of course, we are still in the development stages, but much of the initial planning has been done," said Fluker. "The goal is to celebrate and educate. This year's theme will focus on highlighting the women and youth who played such a vital role in the success of the boycott." The tentative schedule of events is included below. Fluker said that a more formal announcement of commemorative activities will be released at a later date.
