POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
JOB Title:  Archives Research Center Reference Coordinator

The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world's largest consortium of HBCUs-Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College.  Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of the intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library is committed to displaying excellence in our delivery of service.  Notable accomplishments include, recipient of two Communicator Awards for print communication materials, recipient of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant for HBCU Photographic Preservation Project Round II, and national recognition with the receipt of two awards in the 28th Annual Educational Advertising Awards.
To continue our excellence in program and services, the library seeks a vibrant, customer focused, and dynamic Reference Coordinator.  Working with the Archives Research Center team, this position coordinates the reference and public services of the Archives Research Center including research, and resource requests.  Modeling the Library's customer service philosophy, the Reference Coordinator will train and supervise student assistants, maintain and update procedures for efficiency and effectiveness, and monitor and report on equipment functionality, and compile statistical and financial reports. This position requires evening work and weekend work on a rotational basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Manages the Archives reading room and coordinates daily tasks for reference services
  • Conducts research to answer in-person and remote inquiries regarding archival, manuscript and book collections
  • Updates staff reference schedules
  • Supervises and trains student workers and coordinates projects
  • Compiles daily and monthly reference statistics and reports for analysis
  • Monitors and informs staff of class assignments and instructions
  • Assists with planning and preparation of exhibits highlighting archival collections
  • Assists with the processing, preserving, researching, and acquisition of archival, historical, and special collections materials
  • Maintains and updates reference policies and procedures
  • Tallies and forwards funds for reproduction services to Administration
  • Schedules, coordinates, and compiles statistical data for tours and special visits
  • Assists with departmental website and research guide revisions
  •   Participates on department and library-wide committees and/or taskforces
    
  •   Participates in special projects
    
  •   Performs other job related duties as necessary
    

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated customer service experience
  • Strong knowledge of African American history and culture
  • Strong inter-personal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in a culturally diverse environment
  • Work experience in an academic library and knowledge of standard library methods highly desirable
  • Supervisory experience desired

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in History, African American Studies, or, the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired
  • Two years of relevant customer service work experience
  • Experience working in libraries; academic library experience preferred
  • Experience with standard office software such as Microsoft Office applications and web-based technology and resources
