During the 2015-16 academic year, the MSRC, in collaboration with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will once again offer its Travel-to-Collections Grants program to support research in African American, African, and African Diasporic Studies that would benefit from access to its rare manuscript, book, photography and archival collections. The MSRC will award up to five (5) Travel-to-Collections Grants in amounts not to exceed $2,500. The amount awarded to each recipient will be determined by the number of proposals funded and funds available. Recipients will be provided with financial and research support to help defray the costs associated with research-related travel to the MSRC and to facilitate their investigations while on campus. Faculty members, graduate students, and independent scholars who are not affiliated with Howard University are eligible to apply. Applicants must live at least 100 miles from Howard University’s campus, located in Washington, DC. Applicants are strongly encouraged to speak with a member of the MSRC staff about their project proposals before applying for a Travel-to-Collections Grant. Application Requirements * A description of your research project, detailing its intellectual and/or methodological significance within your field of study as well as its relevance to the larger field of African Diasporan Studies (1,500 words maximum). Eligibility The MSRC Travel-to-Collections Grant Program is open to * U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents and international applicants who obtain a U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) prior to receiving award; * Full-time faculty members who completed their PhDs no more than five (5) years prior to applying for this grant; * Graduate students working toward completion of their doctoral dissertations; * Independent researchers engaged in the critical study of African, African American, and African Diasporan themes. ________________________________ Selection Criteria Applications for the Mellon/Moorland Travel-to-Collections Grants will be peer-reviewed by a selection committee consisting of Howard University faculty members and external reviewers. Grant recipients will be selected on the basis of the following criteria: * Relevance of their project proposal to the resources available at MSRC; * Quality and feasibility of their project plan; * Importance of their proposed project to the applicants’ field(s) and to the larger field of African Diasporan Studies; * The applicants’ provisions for disseminating the results of their MSRC-based research to the public at large and/or to their relevant research communities. Applicants who do not receive awards in one year's competition are invited to apply in successive years. Grant Requirements Travel must originate at least one hundred (100) miles from the campus of Howard University. Grant funds may be used for travel to the MSRC (airfare, train, bus, or car mileage to/from Washington, DC); lodging; ground transportation in the Washington, DC metropolitan area (subway, taxi); and charges associated with scanning or photocopying MSRC resources. Grant funds cannot be used to support bicycle or car rentals or meal charges. Recipients must plan research trips lasting a minimum of ten (10) days primarily focusing on the use of collections found in the MSRC. Grant recipients will be required to submit a report to the MSRC Director on their research activities at the Center prior to receiving their final payment. ________________________________ Awardee Requirements Grant awardees must submit the following upon completion of their award term: * An Internal Revenue Service W-9 form prior to receiving award funds (U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number required Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number); and * Original receipts for expenses within ten (10) business days after completion of their Grant-funded research visit(s) to the MSRC. Awardees must acknowledge the Mellon/Moorland Travel-to-Collections Grant Program in any product(s) (article, book, film, performance piece, exhibit, syllabus, etc.) resulting from or supported by (in part or fully) Grant-funded research. Awardees must also provide the MSRC with at least one (1) copy or recording of any product(s) resulting from or supported by (in part or fully) their Grant-funded research.
