BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Under general direction, preserve the library's rare book collections through proper storage, handling, and security. Provides support in collection development, reference, cataloging, preservation, instruction, and outreach.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:
May supervise student workers/graduate assistants and interns.

NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position reports to the Chief Librarian. Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, students, and staff of the Department and University.  External communications include greater academic community, visitors, officials, and the general public.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Preserves the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center (MSRC) rare book and library collections through proper storage, handling, and security.
  • Understands current trends in the preservation of rare books.
  • Select rare books for acquisitions and readers to update our collection on the black experience from the 1600s until now.
  • Promotes the MSRC library through outreach and connecting with academic departments and student organizations.
  • Assist the Chief Librarian in policy development.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Understand the six broadly defined criteria for rare books. 1) market value; 2) rarity and scarcity; 3) date and place of publication; 4) physical and intrinsic characteristics; 5) bibliographic and research value (historical, cultural, or intellectual interest; and 6) condition
  • Understand the standards of Information Literacy
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to motivate, guide, analyze, encourage, and inspire staff with interpersonal relations that foster a team approach.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize software systems and programs.
  • Ability to meet standards of research, publication, and professional service.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious work relations with students, staff, University officials, and the general public.
  • Experience working in special collections, archives, or references.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master's degree in library science from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited institution and three years of experience working with special collections; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
