Bethune-Cookman University News August 2016 B-CU Supports Study Abroad by Joining Global Education Task Force for Minority Institutions As an initiative to support study abroad and global education, B-CU has accepted an invitation to join the Diversity Abroad Task Force: Minority Serving Institutions group. The Diversity in Global Education Task Forces (Diversity Task Forces) is a blend of diversity professionals that will collaborate in groups to provide support and resources related to diversity abroad initiatives that focus on diverse populations, students with disabilities, ethnicity, high school students, religious identity and more. Dr. Chevelle Hall, Associate Professor in the Department of Secondary and Physical Education will be co-leading the Diversity Abroad Task Force: Minority Serving Institutions with a Diversity Abroad staff member. "I am very happy to support this initiative and motivate our students to study abroad," Dr. Hall said. "Joining this task force speaks to the university's mission of developing global leaders and a part of developing global leaders includes study abroad," she stated. Task force groups will meet on a reoccurring basis to work on special projects including; advocacy, professionalism, webinar topics, resource development for diversity abroad and an annual conference. The first Diversity Abroad Task Force: Minority Serving Institutions meeting is next Tuesday afternoon. Dr. Hall and her colleagues plan to focus on how to get more students to travel abroad and increase the cultural competency of B-CU students. Through creating resources within the task force, leaders will be able to bring back materials for students to gain insight on cross-culture competency, which is the understanding of other cultures and learning to adapt while traveling abroad. "It requires students to be able to move and live among other cultures freely. There are many cultures in the world and although one cannot be immersed in all cultures, one must be open to experiencing new cultures," Hall explained. "It also aids in the student's professionalism. Employers want individuals who are able to adapt. Studying abroad provides that major skill," she said. Dr. Hall has traveled to over thirty countries, served as a visiting professor abroad, conducted research in several countries and is committed to help build global leaders at Bethune-Cookman University.
