Hampton University News May 31, 2019 Hampton University Architecture Department to Host Inaugural Summer Design Camp June 24 through June 28 The Hampton University Department of Architecture is hosting their Inaugural Summer Design Camp - Archi Camp - June 24 through June 28 in the Bemis Lab Building. The purpose of the new summer camp is twofold: to be an introduction for local middle school students to the world of architecture, and to serve as a bridge between Hampton University and local communities. This program also hopes to foster dialogue in the local Hampton Roads community about the power of design, and to inspire more young students of color to apply to architecture schools. During Archi Camp, a one-week commuter program, students will be able to learn from local professionals, participate in design workshops and present their designs in a final exhibition. This year's campers are from Achievable Dream Academy and the Educational Talent Search. Scholarships were provided to cover the majority of the cost of attendance. The central theme of the camp is "Learning to Think like an Architect." Laura Battaglia, Camp Administrator, Assistant Professor for the Hampton University Department of Architecture, as well as a licensed professional architect, values Design Thinking as a unique way of solving problems. "When designing, architects engage in a way of working where they explore, test options and collaborate to find the best solution. This can be a great asset for students interested in exploring STEM careers that bridge across disciplines," said Battaglia. "Archi Camp is intended to immerse these young people in Design Thinking, and to empower them with creative ways to approach challenges."
