Coahoma Community College News March 26, 2018 CCC Phi Beta Lambda Student Places Twice During State Competition Coahoma Community College's chapter of Phi Beta Lambda recently participated in the organization's State Leadership Conference/Competition held at Mississippi University for Women. Phi Beta Lambda is a business organization designed to prepare students for success as leaders in business, education, and the community. Its mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development. The organization works to inspire and prepare students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences. J.B. Frieson, III and Kiana Smith, both of Clarksdale, MS, (administrative professional technology students) competed in the areas of Administrative Technology, Computer Applications, and Business Communications. Kiana Smith received second place in Computer Applications and third place in Business Communications categories of the competition. She is proud of her accomplishments and encourages others to pursue their passions. "Never be nervous to do something new or different. Just relax and enjoy the experience," said Smith. "For years I've been working with computers, even though I wasn't in a class for it. I'm excited and hopeful for the future." As part of the competition, students took an objective test, which counted for 20% of their score and a production test, which counted for 80% of their score. They also had to produce and format various documents in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Kimberly Hollins, business office technology instructor/Phi Beta Lambda advisor is proud of CCC's showing and hopes to achieve more in the future. "I am extremely proud of these students for their hard work and effort," said Hollins. "They were able to connect and network with other students from community colleges and senior colleges in Mississippi. At the conference, we were also recognized for donating $150.00 to the March of Dimes." The winners will have an opportunity to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Baltimore, Maryland in June.
