Shaw University News November 2, 2021 Shaw University and Food Lion Partner to Open On-Campus Food Pantries for Students On Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, Shaw University will launch the first of six new food pantries on campus, with support from corporate partner Food Lion, whose representatives will present a $15,000 check to the university to help combat food insecurities experienced by students on the campus. Terry Workman, manager of the Avent Ferry Shopping Center Food Lion, will present the donation to Shaw University President Dr. Paulette Dillard at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Football House located at 521 S. Person Street. In a study reported to Congress by the Congressional Research Service, in June 2021, it stated, "Food insecurity-the condition of having inadequate food due to a lack of resources-affected roughly 1 in 10 Americans in 2019, and this number increased during the COVID-19 pandemic." In an article printed in the Journal of American College Health titled, "Prevalence of food insecurity among students attending four Historically Black Colleges and Universities," statistics were given for a study that examined the prevalence of food insecurity among students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the Southeastern United States. Results: Nearly 3 in 4 students (72.9%) reported some level of food insecurity in the past year. Conclusions: Students attending HBCUs experience food insecurity at levels that exceed estimates reported among students attending predominantly White institutions. "Food Lion Feeds is pleased to support Shaw University's on-campus food pantry to better serve as a long-term, sustainable resource for food-insecure students," said Terry Workman, store manager of Food Lion. "We want to help set students up for success. They should not have to choose between buying books and paying for food." The Food Lion donation will be used to open a food pantry in each of the four residence halls; one in the Willie E. Gary Student Center for off-campus students; and one in the Football House for off-campus athletes. Food Lion is a proud sponsor of the CIAA conference, of which Shaw University is a member. The donation is an extension of the support Food Lion gives to all members of the CIAA. Sandra M.
